Residents Protest DDOT Bike Plan in Ivy City
Residents, supported by the DC Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans (DCDBP), protest to stop the implementation of another bike plan that installs protected bike lanes and removes residential parking, risking the safety of pedestrians. Our goal is to protect the seniors, the disabled/physically challenged and parents with children. They should not have to walk long distances at all hours of the day and night, in adverse weather conditions because the Mayor and the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) installed protected bike lanes.
The DC Coalition on DDOT Bike Plans was created to monitor, address, and rectify the harmful impact of protected bike lanes in commercial and residential neighborhoods in Washington DC. While we support cycling and safety in biking, protected bike lanes promote bad behavior among cyclists, as speeding, and create hazards for pedestrians. We petition the Mayor, DDOT and Councilmembers to reject plans that cripple the economic and social nerve center of our livable/walkable neighborhoods, and instead encourage consideration of alternate bike routes to minimize negative community impact. Biker safety is important and wanted, but not at the expense of pedestrian safety.
